support children in foster care

At any given time, there are approximately 13,000 Michigan children in foster care due to abuse or neglect. These children came into the system at no fault of their own. If you have a heart for children in care, but have decided foster parenting is not right for you or your family at this time, there are still ways you can help.

YOU CAN HELP BY:

  • Mentoring a child through Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
  • Providing job opportunities for older youth
  • Donating school supplies (books, pencils, crayons, graphing calculators, folders, etc.)
  • Buying birthday cakes for children in foster care
  • Encouraging others to become foster parents
  • Providing pre-packaged or catered meals for foster parent meetings/trainings
  • Covering the cost of a prom dress or suit
  • Providing financial assistance for field trips
  • Sponsoring a child’s Christmas for only $30
  • Donating new children’s items such as bikes, stuffed animals, luggage, car seats
  • Providing free tutoring
  • Encouraging child welfare social workers

YOUR ORGANIZATION, CHURCH OR WORKPLACE CAN:

  • Hold a diaper, book or pajama drive
  • Put together care packages for youth aging out of the foster care system who are going to college or moving into their first apartment
  • Provide gift cards for gas or groceries for older foster care youth who are living independently
  • Provide gift cards for restaurants or movie theaters for foster parents to have date night or family night
  • Provide gas cards for biological parents trying to reduce barriers to having their child return home
  • Cover the cost of a family membership to a local family fun spot
  • Sponsor a Christmas shopping event where children in foster care can choose gifts for their families and friends
  • Set up a service day to volunteer at our agency
  • Make art kits (pencils, sketchbooks, markers, etc.)
  • Make cuddle kits (new blankets, pillows, nightlight, etc.)

YOUR BUSINESS CAN PROVIDE THINGS SUCH AS:

  • Scholarships for summer camp, sports teams, dance, art or music lessons
  • Free services (home furnishings, mechanic services, dental care, family dinners, haircuts, shoes, etc.)
  • Promotion of foster parenting via internal newsletters/publications
  • Sharing a link to our website with information about foster care, adoption and CASA
