At Arbor Circle, our goal is to reunite children in foster care with their biological parents, but sometimes, this is not possible. When biological parents lose their right to be caregivers for their children, our adoption team works to place the child in a loving, permanent home. Foster care adoption is the process by which a child’s foster parents or another family provides a forever family for the child in need. Adopting from foster care is similar to other types of adoption.

Navigating the Foster Care Adoption Process with Support and Guidance

Adopting from foster care shares similarities with other types of adoption, and our dedicated team at Arbor Circle is here to guide prospective adoptive families through every step of the process. We understand that adoption can be an emotional and complex journey, and we are committed to providing the necessary resources, support, and guidance to help families navigate this life-changing experience.

Families who are successful in adoption often have many of the following qualities:

  • A sense of humor
  • Tolerance for changes and unknowns
  • Flexibility
  • Ability to accept and express emotions
  • Tolerance for rejection
  • Ability to work with children who have significant emotional and behavioral needs

All types of families can become adoptive families, including adults who are single, married, or living with a partner. Arbor Circle accepts, affirms, and celebrates LGBTQ+ foster and adoptive families and actively seeks racially diverse adoptive families who demographically represent the children we serve.

Adoptive parents should have an adequate income to meet their family’s needs to be financially stable, and can rent or own their home. You must be willing for everyone in your home to undergo complete background checks.

Children available for adoption through Arbor Circle are children who are in the foster care system due to abuse or neglect, and whose parents’ rights have been terminated. They come from many racial, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Our primary need is for families who are able to care for older children or teens, sibling groups, and children of color. Some children have never had a stable home, and may display moderate to severe mental health and behavioral needs. All of these children have experienced the grief and loss of having been separated from their families.

There are often little or no fees when adopting children from the foster care system. The Adoption Subsidy Program provides financial support subsidy and/or medical subsidy for families adopting children from the foster care system. Support subsidy assists with the payment of expenses related to caring for and raising the child. Medical subsidy assists with the costs of necessary treatment for physical, mental, or emotional conditions which existed, or the cause of which existed, prior to adoption. Neither is meant to cover all expenses incurred in raising a child; rather, these payments are meant to help offset some of the cost. Additionally, families who adopt from the foster care system are eligible for an adoption tax credit. Be sure to consult your tax advisor about the availability of any government tax credit and how that credit may benefit you.
