The Thomas J. Bullock Memorial Fund

Thomas J. Bullock, a pioneer in substance use treatment and recovery, was the inspiration for the Thomas J. Bullock Memorial Fund. His too-short life is honored by the opportunities Arbor Circle and the Fund will present for addiction professionals and the broader community to learn together. The Thomas J. Bullock Memorial Fund was established through a monetary gift by James and Barbara Haveman.

about the fund

Tom’s important legacy is rooted in the early days of Project Rehab, a non-profit organization that began in 1968 and continues today through a 2011 merger with Cherry Street Health Center. With a focus on helping individuals achieve and maintain sobriety, Project Rehab offered a supportive and safe environment for those seeking recovery.

Tom began his journey as an individual experiencing his own substance use challenges. Initially participating in services at Project Rehab as a consumer, he eventually became a peer group leader and soon thereafter was named Rehabilitation Director of Project Rehab. Tom passed away unexpectedly in 1973 at age 43.

In celebration of the professional contributions of Thomas J. Bullock, the Fund will underwrite an annual event for the West Michigan community, with topics including:

  • Innovative and proven models of recovery in the field of substance use, addiction, and recovery.
  • The impact of substance use/abuse and addiction on chronic health conditions.
  • Public policy and justice issues specific to substance use, addiction, and recovery.
  • Initiatives and strategies that educate/prepare individuals to work in the field of substance use, prevention, and treatment.
  • Exploring funding models that promote coordinated and collaborative systems of care for substance use treatment and prevention.

The annual event will be hosted by Arbor Circle.
